A Conversation with Mason Poli from Quinnipiac University

We caught up with Quinnipiac University Men’s Lacrosse Coach Mason Poli for a discussion about the Quinnipiac lacrosse program and what he looks for when recruiting student-athletes.

The Conversation

What are you most excited about with regards to your program?

Our brand new stadium/locker room being completed this summer!

What jumps out at you when recruiting? What do you look for in a player?

I look for players who are competing and hustling, no matter the setting.

What are your “pet peeves” when recruiting?

Players trying to do everything themselves. Lacrosse is a team sport.

What is the best way interested student-athletes should get in touch with you?

What should student-athletes avoid in their messaging to college coaches?

Sending generic emails. Send something personal about the school, so it shows you did some research and are not blasting emails to every school.

How would you describe your coaching style?

Very personable. I hold my athletes to a high standard, to not only develop their game, but also develop as young men.

Walk us through your timeline when recruiting a student athlete?

We start evaluating players their sophomore year of High School. We do not have a timeline for commitments.

What kind of players succeed at your program?

Hard workers!

What’s your recruiting strategy going into an event? After an event?

I go in with an open mind and watch to see who stands out. After the event I will review my notes and find out where those players will be playing again. We are very thorough with our recruiting and like to see players multiple times.
