Introduction

We caught up with UMass Lowell Assistant Women’s Lacrosse Coach Ashley Durepo for a discussion about the UMass Lowell lacrosse program and what she looks for when recruiting student-athletes.

You can find our conversation below.

The Conversation

What are you most excited about with regards to your program?

I am excited that we can allow our players to be challenged in some rigorous academic majors at our school (nursing, engineering, physical therapy) while still competing in Division I athletics. The opportunity to help start a new program has been very rewarding.

What jumps out at you when recruiting? What do you look for in a player?

When recruiting, I love watching a player that is aggressive in the ride and a player who works to make up for her mistake. I also look for a player who is still fighting even if her team is down.

What are your “pet peeves” when recruiting?

My biggest pet peeve while recruiting is a player that talks back to the ref or her coaches and a player who makes a scene after a mistake instead of working to get the ball back.

What is the best way interested student-athletes should get in touch with you?

The best way for interested student-athletes to get in touch with me is via email at ashley_durepo@uml.edu.

What should student-athletes avoid in their messaging to college coaches?

In a message to college coaches, student athletes should avoid the generalized email that you can tell when to 100 other coaches as well. Student-athletes should also address the coaches as “Coach” and be sure to spell the coach’s name correctly.

Once again, thanks to Ashley for her time, and best of luck to UMass Lowell the rest of the season!
