stepsDuring the recruiting process, it is important to not be tied up with what can feel like chaos around you.

Instead, it’s important to simply go into yours with a plan and to attack in head on. This way, you will be better able to focus on you!

Here are five ways in which you can take control of your process.

1. Identify your Target List of Schools

Early in your recruiting process, it is helpful to narrow down your college search to about 25-30 schools that would be a good fit for you academically, athletically and socially.

Include a solid mix of schools across Divisions I, II and III, and try to choose the best academic schools that fit your profile. Soccer should be used as a vehicle that helps drive you to the best school possible!

2. Join a Club Team

In today’s recruiting landscape, club teams are vital to the recruiting process.

Simply put, a vast majority of college coaches will see you play live during one of your club team events, be that a showcase, tournament or other outlet.

In addition to being an important component of the recruiting process, these teams will assist in developing your game and expose you to coaches and philosophies you may not have been aware of previously.

3. Create a Highlight Reel

One of the most vital aspects in the current recruiting landscape is your highlight reel. This is a 15-20 play video that highlights your best attributes as a player, and is likely how a college coach will first see you in action.

College coaches use highlight reels to see if a player has the skills and athleticism necessary to fit into their system. This also serves as a starting point for a coach to try and see you play live at a showcase or other in-season game.

4. Contact College Coaches

As a high school student athlete, one of the first ways to get on the radar of college coaches is by sending them an email of interest.

Doing this is imperative – being proactive is the only way to ensure a coach is aware of you and your interest in their school.

The old adage “you miss 100 percent of the shots you do not take” certainly applies here.

5. Study, Study, Study

Grades are of paramount importance in the recruiting process.

A good GPA and test scores will go a long way in determining which schools you are even eligible for.

Remember, you are likely going pro in something other than sports, so ensure you are doing everything in your power to attend the best school possible.
