The Conversation

What are you most excited about with regards to your program?

The history and culture that surrounds KU lacrosse.

What jumps out at you when recruiting? What do you look for in a player?

Unselfish, team oriented players who are willing to do the little things to win.

What are your “pet peeves” when recruiting?

When recruits send generic or misspelled emails with poor grammar.

What should student-athletes avoid in their messaging to college coaches?

Asking about playing time and if they see themselves starting in their first year.

What is the best way interested student-athletes should get in touch with you?

Send me an email with a video clip that’s under 5 minutes.

How would you describe your coaching style?

Honest and tough but I always have my guys best interest in mind.

Walk us through your timeline when recruiting a student athlete?

I usually like to initiate contact in the Summer months and guide them right up to their H.S. graduation.

What kind of players succeed at your program?

Mentally tough, thick skinned athletes that work hard but want to have fun through the process.

Tell us about your transition from player to college coach?

I was a college wrestler who was attracted to lacrosse. I played four years at Kean just picking it up in school after I left the wrestling team. In the 90’s you could do that and walk on. Since my time was short with the sport there was a strong desire to learn and stick with it in any way after college. Coaching was a natural transition.

Once again, thanks to Shelley for his time, and best of luck to Kean this season!
