We caught up with Frostburg State University Men’s Lacrosse Coach Kevin McDonough for a discussion about the their lacrosse program and what he looks for when recruiting student-athletes.

The Conversation
What are you most excited about with regards to your program?
In just 6 years as a Varsity program we have broken into the Top 20 Rankings in both of the past two seasons. We are extremely excited about our current future and continuing to compete at the highest level of D3 lacrosse.
What jumps out at you when recruiting? What do you look for in a player?
Size/Speed/Effort are 3 things that will jump out right away as well as a player with a strong lacrosse IQ.
What are your “pet peeves” when recruiting?
Laziness on the field as well as complaining to officials.
What is the best way interested student-athletes should get in touch with you?
Personalized emails are easiest to respond too.
What should student-athletes avoid in their messaging to college coaches?
Include necessary information, but don’t over do it. Include your name, year, position, size, hand, high school/club team, events you’ll be playing in, contact number and also your GPA and testing scores. All that information is important for us as coaches to have.
How would you describe your coaching style?
I like to have the guys playing loose and being energetic. Lacrosse practice should be the highlight of your day.
Walk us through your timeline when recruiting a student-athlete?
During the summer is busiest time for us. After seeing players and reaching out to them we try and get them to campus and show them the school and talk about our program. After that we give them an open time table to make a decision as it is an enormously important decision in their lives and they shouldn’t rush it.
What kind of players succeed at your program?
Players that are willing to put in extra work in the classroom, weight room and with individual skill work. They need to be willing to work harder off the field than they do in practice.
Tell us about your transition from player to college coach?
I’ve enjoyed my transition thus far. It has given me a new appreciation for the game and can see the game from a completely different angle.
What’s your recruiting strategy going into an event? After an event?
We try to see players who have expressed interest in us and watch teams we’ve typically had success with in the past and other top teams at an event. After we try to reach out to players that impressed us to get them out to campus as well as staying in contact with players we’ve been in contact with.
