FFroshThe 2013 Fab Frosh Showcase took place on Friday, July 26 at Greenwich High School in Greenwich, Connecticut.

The one-day event featured over 200 members of the 2016 Class, broken up into 12 teams. Participants hailed from 25 States, 148 high schools, and represented over 100 club teams.

After registration, the day began with an informative recruiting seminar run by SportsRecruits.com. The informational session, which was open to players and parents, provided an overview of the recruiting timeline and featured a Q & A to aid players and their families.

There were plenty of coaches on hand at Greenwich High School, including Army, Brown, Bryant, Bucknell, Colgate, Dartmouth, Fairfield, Hofstra, Loyola, Navy, Princeton and Stony Brook among many others.

Here are five players that stood out and some others who made an impression.


FAB FROSH SHOWCASE – FEATURED FIVE:

1. WILL RENZ

Position: Midfield

Class: 2016

High School: Chaminade (NY)

Overall: An tremendous athlete, Renz blends his ideal size with good speed to be a force from the midfield. He is an excellent, downhill dodger who uses an effective split dodge from up top to gain a step on defenders. He does a good job lowering his shoulder into defenders to protect his stick, and frees his hands extraordinarily well. What stood out most about Renz was his lethal shot on the move, which was equally effective with both his right and left hands.

From the Notebook: Athlete. Fluid. Looks the part. Excellent split. Frees hands well. Hard, accurate shooter. Prototypical size. Chaminade pedigree.

2. JEREMY MAGNO

Position: Midfield

Class: 2016

High School: Bergen Catholic (NJ)

Overall: A fluid athlete, Magno was impressive throughout the day at Fab Frosh. He was very good in transition, utilizing his excellent speed to push the tempo on multiple occasions. Magno is an effective dodger, and showed a quick first step from the top of the box. He has an excellent shot on the run, but also possesses good vision, making some very nice passes while dodging down the alley.

From the Notebook: Fluid athlete. Smooth. Great shot on the run. Pushes tempo. Fast. Good IQ.

3. MARK EVANCHICK

Position: Defense

Class: 2016

High School: Darien (CT)

Overall: Evanchick is a big, strong defender who plays well in all phases of the game. He is very strong on the ball, and has very good footwork to compliment his size. He covers a lot of ground effortlessly, and uses his strength at goal line extended to keep dodgers at bay with a solid V-hold. He throws great lift checks, and his stick is always active with pokes and slaps on the hands of ball carriers. Evanchick, who started at Darien (CT) as a Freshman, also took faceoffs during the season for the Blue Wave.

From the Notebook: Big. Very strong. Football player build. Excellent on ball. Uses strength to dictate to ball carriers.

4. JUSTIN CONNER

Position: LSM/Defense

Class: 2016

High School: Landon (MD)

Overall: Conner was outstanding at Fab Frosh. He is an athletic, fluid LSM that is a force in transition. He has an excellent stick, and used his deft handle to carry the ball upfield and start transition on numerous occasions. A ground-ball machine, Conner is a fluid and poised player. Defensively, his footwork was outstanding, and he was able to disrupt ball carriers with well timed checks that he threw without sacrificing foot position.

From the Notebook: Smooth. Transition LSM. Vacuum on ground balls. Poised with ball in his stick. Good feet.

5. JACK O’CONNOR

Position: Goalie

Class: 2016

High School: Fairfield Prep

Overall: O’Connor was solid throughout the day and had a very nice All-Star game. He is an active, athletic goaltender who tracks the ball very well. He is able to make acrobatic saves inside, and communicated well with his defenders. He also threw nice outlet passes to spring multiple fast breaks.

Others who made an impression:

Bennett Taylor – D – 2016 – HB Plant (FL): A big defender, Taylor has an outstanding stick on the defensive side of the ball and excellent hand-eye-coordination. The Florida product caused numerous turnovers throughout the day with some excellent pass knockdowns and interceptions, resulting directly from having his stick in passing lanes. On one notable occasion, he had a one-handed interception, which he then legged upfield to start a fast break.

Jack Hannigan – A – 2016 – East Islip (NY): A shifty attackman, Hannigan has tremendous lacrosse IQ, evidenced by his excellent vision and ability to find open cutters. While his passing skills were notable, he could also score – displaying a good, accurate shot on multiple occasions. But what stood out most was his tenacity in the riding game, never conceding possessions and causing a few turnovers throughout the day.

Brett Kennedy – D – 2016 – Ridgewood (NJ): Kennedy is a smart defenseman who throws well-timed checks to cause takeaways. He is poised in the defensive end, and keeps his feet moving on-ball. He has good speed, and pushed transition numerous times throughout the day. He showed smarts with the ball in clearing situations, and was able to attack the cage when the situation warranted.

Louie Yovino – M – 2016 – St. Thomas Aquinas (FL): A smaller, scrappy midfielder, Yovino plays with a chip on his shoulder. He was constantly involved in the action throughout the day, picking up contested ground balls in-between-the-boxes. He sparked transition multiple times with his top-end speed, and he showed good ability both to move the ball to open players or to finish himself.

Jake Southren – A – 2016 – Randolph (NJ): Southern is a quick attackman who excels when dodging from X and the wings. He drives to the cage with his head up, utilizing great vision to locate cutting teammates. A smooth, fluid player, Southren can also finish, taking the extra step necessary to increase his angle on dodges from behind.
