BOTH TEAMS ENTER THE GAME UNDEFEATED.

Both Smithtown West and Ward Melville enter the game with spotless records.

The Bulls are 7-0, recording impressive wins over Syosset (NY) and Farmingdale (NY).

Meanwhile, the Patriots are 6-0, with wins over Smithtown East (NY) and Half Hollow Hills West (NY) already on the resume.

THE TEAMS KNOW EACH OTHER WELL.

In recent memory, the race for the Suffolk County Class A crown has been a three-team affair between West Islip, Smithtown West, and Ward Melville. While West Islip has had the majority of the success, the Lions look to be more vulnerable this season than in recent years, meaning the door may be open for one of these two teams to win Suffolk County in 2013.

The schools met twice last year. Smithtown West won the regular season tilt, 12-6. But the Patriots were able to defeat the Bulls in the County Semi-Finals, taking out the Bulls 13-9.

KEEP AN EYE ON: THE DEFENSES.

Both of these teams enter today’s contest with prolific offensive numbers.

Ward Melville is averaging 15.3 goals per game this season, having scored no fewer than 14 goals in each of their six wins.

Meanwhile, Smithtown West is not far behind, averaging 13.3 goals per game in 2013. They, too, have reached double digits in each contest, posting no fewer than 10 goals in their seven victories.

While these offensive numbers jump off the page, the defenses have more than held their own – and should be key today.

The Patriots are giving up just 4.8 goals per game thus far, a pretty astounding number by lacrosse standards. Meanwhile the Bulls are only a goal behind, sitting themselves at an impressive 5.7 goals against average.

While the offenses have had their way in the early going, look for whichever defense is able to step up today to have a great chance at earning the coveted win.
