Loyola BlakefieldThis high school season, we will be bringing you a feature each Tuesday where we provide some notable news and notes for the week ahead. Here is the feature for March 26.

Last week, the boy’s high school season got into full swing. There were some great interstate games, highlighted by Garden City (NY) taking down Loyola-Blakefield (MD) at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland (right; photo courtesy of Craig Chase; see full gallery here) and Avon Old Farms (CT) defeating Kent Denver (CO) in Tampa, Florida.

This week’s games are again highlighted by some fantastic interstate matchups.

Game of the Week: Episcopal Dallas (TX) at Loyola-Blakefield (MD) (Wednesday, 3/27).
With some excellent matchups, this was a tough call. Episcopal is one of Texas’ better teams, while Loyola-Blakefield is a perennial power in Maryland. Both teams are coming off tough losses last weekend. Episcopal will first face Calverton (MD) on Tuesday, so fatigue may be a factor for the Eagles. These games are always fun, as the teams serve as representatives of their states at large.

Team to Watch: West Islip (NY)
West Islip opens their season with two games this week. They will first take on Connetquot (NY) on Wednesday, March 27 before their annual tussle with Chaminade (NY) on Saturday, March 30. A big week in the early going for the Lions, who enter the season as the defending NY State Class A Champions, having won five of the last seven state titles overall. This season, they will be challenged in a big way by Smithtown West (NY) out in Suffolk County.

Stat of the Week: An interesting tidbit from the Deerfield (MA) at Brunswick (CT) matchup (Saturday, 3/30):
Over the past five meetings (2008-2012), perennial national power Deerfield has opened its season with a win against Brunswick. In those games, they have outscored the Bruins by an average of 4.4 goals. However, in the last two seasons (2011-2012), the contest was decided by just one goal, including last year’s 7-6 overtime decision. Is this the year Brunswick gets over the hump?

Content note: We will be covering the Brunswick (CT) at Greenwich (CT) scrimmage on Tuesday. Be sure to check back to video and team write-ups this week.

Noteworthy Games: There are plenty of excellent games this week. Here are five that stand out in addition to those listed above.

3/26 Lake Highland Prep (FL) at St. Thomas Aquinas (FL)
3/27 Rocky Point (NY) at Sayville (NY)
3/27 Columbine (CO) at Yorktown (NY)
3/28 Culver Academy (IN) at Landon (MD)
3/30 Cherry Creek (CO) at St. Paul’s (MD)
