Girl’s High School Weekend Recap: April 29

Last week in girl’s high school lacrosse was highlighted by a Virginia power making a trip to Long Island for two huge interstate matchups. St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes (VA) headed North for two big games against traditional Long Island powers. First on Friday, the Saints took down Manhasset (NY) by a 16-14 score. Then on Saturday, they traveled to South Huntington to face St. Anthony’s (NY). The game was a close one, won by the Friars 9-8. The win moved St. Anthony’s to 9-1, who after an early-season loss to Vero Beach (FL) have won seven consecutive games. Meanwhile, the Saints suffered their first loss of the season and fell to 19-1. ...

Game Observations: Chaminade (NY) 5, St. Ignatius (CA) 4

The Chaminade Flyers (NY) held on for a tight 5-4 victory over San Francisco power St. Ignatius (CA) on Thursday afternoon at Chaminade High School. It was an great matchup of East and West Coast powers. Chaminade extended its undefeated start in 2013 to 9-0. Meanwhile, St. Ignatius suffered its first setback of the season and fell to 15-1. Chaminade took leads of 4-1 and 5-2, but some excellent goaltending kept the Wildcats in the contest and allowed them to pull within one goal entering the fourth quarter. They would get no closer, however, as an intense final-second defensive stand by the Flyers preserved the one-goal victory. ...

The Chaminade Flyers (NY) defeated the visiting St. Ignatius Wildcats (CA) by a final score of 5-4 at Chaminade High School on Thursday afternoon. The win moves Chaminade to 9-0 on the season. St. Ignatius suffers its first loss of 2013 and falls to 15-1. The loss snaps an 18-game winning streak for the Wildcats and marks their first loss since April 21 of last season to Torrey Pines (CA). Chaminade continues its impressive 2013 run, adding another quality win to a resume that already includes victories over Manhasset (NY), West Islip (NY), Fairfield Prep (CT) and St. Anthony's (NY). ...

They have defeated Torrey Pines (CA), Coronado (CA) and Redwood (CA) thus far this season. Meanwhile, the Flyers are 8-0 against a very difficult schedule. They have wins over Manhasset (NY), West Islip (NY) and St. Anthony’s (NY) already to their credit. ...

NY Islanders Star John Tavares Idolizes His Uncle, NLL legend John Tavares

There was a really great piece by Jeff Z. Klein in the NY Times yesterday profiling John Tavares, the Buffalo Bandits (NLL) star who happens to be the uncle of NY Islanders star center and Hart Trophy (NHL MVP) candidate John Tavares. The elder Tavares (right; photo credit NLL.com), a school teacher in Ontario, has played 22 seasons in the NLL. He has won four championships and per the article is the highest scoring player in the history of indoor lacrosse, amassing an incredible 1,666 points in the NLL. The younger Tavares is now one of the best players in the NHL and is a serious candidate to win the league’s MVP award. This season, he has led the Islanders back to the playoffs for the first time since 2007. He also played box lacrosse as a teenager. Per Klein, he was even the Bandits’ ball boy for a couple of seasons growing up. ...
