As of August 1, 2024, NCAA Division II coaches can contact prospective student-athletes (PSAs) of any age, offering earlier opportunities to build relationships and receive feedback. Learn how these updates impact recruiting strategies and how early preparation can set you up for success in your college athletic journey.
NCAA Division II Communication Rule Changes
As of August 1st, 2024, NCAA Division II coaches can communicate with prospective student-athletes (PSAs) of any age through email, phone, text, and social media. Unlike Division I, which restricts communication for many sports until June 15th after a student-athlete’s sophomore year, Division II now permits earlier recruiting conversations. However, face-to-face contact (such as official and unofficial visits) remains limited until June 15th, following the athlete’s sophomore year.
The Referenced NCAA DII Rule Changes
“Communication with a prospective student-athlete (PSA) or their relative or legal guardian(s) shall be made at any time.” (NCAA DII LSDBI 13.1.3.1 Revised: 7/23/24 effective 8/1/24)
What This Means for Future College Student-Athletes
In addition to casting a wide net with your target list of schools, SportsRecruits recommends that student-athletes focus on preparing for the recruiting process early in their high school careers. The updated Division II recruiting rules enable younger athletes to get on coaches’ radar, show their progression, and build relationships. However, we believe it’s essential to approach this process thoughtfully, using it as an opportunity to learn more about your goals and the options available to you. Preparation prepares you for success and reduces stress as you navigate the evolving recruiting landscape.
By beginning to communicate with college coaches, you may receive valuable feedback from DII, DIII, JUCO, and NAIA coaches that can be incredibly helpful to your development as a student-athlete. Additionally, speaking with college coaches one-on-one during a phone call or Zoom meeting before your junior year is a great way to build your communication and interview skills, preparing you for future conversations with coaches at all levels.
If you’re considering college athletics, creating a SportsRecruits profile early on in your high school career gives you the tools to take control of your process, helping you find and connect with your best-fit schools. Starting early ensures you’re prepared to navigate a competitive and evolving recruiting landscape.
