The Conversation
What are you most excited about with regards to your program?
It is my first year here at Merrimack and I’m excited to make this the program I believe it can be. Other sports are doing well here on the national level and while it will take time and hard work I believe the women’s lacrosse team can also compete on a national level.
What jumps out at you when recruiting? What do you look for in a player?
I don’t think there is that one thing. I think you look for what a player will bring to your team. You are looking for several cogs that you think will work together to create a machine of a team!
What are your “pet peeves” when recruiting?
This one is tough! I think talking back is a big one, to officials, coaches and parents. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a girl interact with her parents in a rude way. I think that is my pet peeve.
What is the best way interested student-athletes should get in touch with you?
“I think there is nothing you should avoid. Be yourself. This past year I had a meeting with a student-athlete that we had been emailing for weeks. I felt like I knew her. She sat down and it was a super awkward conversation. I can’t even describe it! And then I was chatting with her dad and it was totally at ease. Suddenly it dawned on me! I had been emailing with the dad. That is why we had an easy time talking. Please don’t do that.”
What should student-athletes avoid in their messaging to college coaches?
Having their parents be the one to email us.
Once again, thanks to Paula for her time, and best of luck to Merrimack the rest of the season!
