With snow on the ground pretty much all over the country, it may be hard to believe that lacrosse season is upon us. College games have started, and in the coming weeks high school tryouts and practices will be in full swing.
While student-athletes prepare for the season on the field – running, lifting, wall ball, sprints, sprints and more sprints – it is equally as important to prepare for the recruiting process off of the field. One of the most important areas in the recruiting space to prepare for outside the lines are game video and highlight reels.
Before you attend a recruiting event this coming Summer, you will want to supply your “target list” of 20-30 schools with a highlight reel, full game, academic information and event schedule. This is true of any age group – from freshman or JV up to Varsity.
An easy way to think of this: You want to give the coaches on your “target list” of schools a reason to come see you play in person at an event this Summer. The way to do this is to have them see what kind of player you are on film.
The old Hollywood adage “Show, Don’t Tell” is directly applicable to this situation. Don’t just tell a coach about your game – SHOW them you are worth their time.
To produce a highlight reel, you will need game video. Unfortunately, a majority of high school programs do not film their games – especially at the JV or Freshman levels. Considering the accelerated recruiting timeline, this is obviously something you need to be aware of!
College coaches have a limited amount of time at each event they attend in the Summer, and have a list of players they are there to see more of. You get on that list by having prior communication with each target school, showing them your game.
You will likely be spending plenty of money and traveling hundreds of miles this Summer to play in tournaments and showcases. Make sure you make this worth your while by entering the Summer with a plan and a highlight reel so coaches are there to see you play.
