D3ShowcaseThe D3 Lacrosse Showcase will return to the Indoor Sports Pavilion in Randolph, New Jersey on January 20, 2014.

In advance of the event, LRNews interviewed coaches from schools that have indicated they will be attending the event.

Today, we check in with Salisbury Assistant Coach Chad Surman, who discusses the Sea Gulls’ success, what they look for in players and the positive attributes of the D3 Lacrosse Showcase.

Salisbury has consistently been a Division III power. What makes the program so successful?

Our success can be attributed to a majority of our guys getting after it outside of the standard 3 PM- PM practice time. We call it ‘Edge’ workouts. When majority of your team is ‘Edging,’ it brings confidence and success.

What kind of player are you looking for when recruiting ?

We are looking for fast, athletic players that like to work hard on their game.

SalsWhat would you recommend players interested in Salisbury should focus on both on and off the field?

Off the field, academics are the most important. Playing lacrosse in college is a privilege and a part of the student-athlete experience. On the field, players need to focus mentally to make good decisions in different situations.

You played Division III lacrosse yourself. What made the experience an attractive and rewarding one for you?

I didn’t really consider it a DIII vs. DI or DII type of decision. I wanted to attend a school that was right for me. Salisbury happened to be the right fit. The size of the school, cost and location were big factors in my choice. From a lacrosse perspective, I wanted a first-class organization and the historic program led by Hall of Fame Coach Jim Berkman was exactly that.

Lacrosse is not yet like football or basketball, where talent drastically separates the divisions. I think too often a particular school is labeled based on the DI/DII/DIII status.

What makes the D3 Showcase event a successful one for students targeting the DIII experience?

An event like this is going to draw the attention of a lot of DIII coaches. At other events, you don’t always know what the players are looking for in a college or university. The D3 Showcase takes some of the mystery out of the equation. If we see a player we like, we know there is a really good chance they want to attend a school like ours.

Thanks so much to Chad for his time!
