The first session of the Baltimore Summer Kickoff took place from Friday, June 14 to Sunday, June 16 at the St. Pauls School in Maryland. Fridays session featured individual clinics, with Saturday featuring over 60 games on seven different fields. Sunday featured the final team games as Session 1 wound down.
The teams participating were an impressive, diverse group featuring players from the 2014, 2015 and 2016 classes from all over the country. The event, run by High Point head coach Jon Torpey and his outstanding staff, showcased some excellent talent over the three-day session.
Among the teams that stood out with their play Saturday included the three Top Gun Fighting Clams teams (2016; 2015 RW and 2015 OB based in New England), the three Green Turtle squads (204, 2015, 2016 based in Maryland) and the three Cincy Royals clubs (2014, 2015, and 2016 based in Ohio). Highland Park a team featuring players from Texas was also very impressive.
There were plenty of coaches on hand to take in the days action Saturday, which culminated in two All-Star Games: the first for members of the class of 2014, and the second for members of the 2015 and 2016 classes.
Among the schools represented from the DI landscape were ACC powers Maryland, North Carolina, and Virginia; Western pinnacle Denver, new Big Ten member Johns Hopkins, 2013 Patriot League upstart Bucknell, as well as national powers Loyola and Hofstra.
The DIII scene was also well represented. Among those spotted was southern staple Lynchburg as well as newcomer Albright College, who began NCAA play in 2012. The Lions have one of the hardest-working staffs we have seen this young recruiting season.
Saturday was a bright, sunny day at St. Pauls. The event ran extraordinarily well, with teams shifting seamlessly throughout the seven fields on the Crusaders campus. Each team played three games, providing players ample opportunity to make and impression and improve their skill.
