Relive the Season: Chapter 6 – Smithtown West (NY) at Ward Melville (NY)

This spring, the LR News team traveled to 15 games across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Regions, making stops from Conestoga (PA) up to Salisbury (CT) and many in between. Chapter 6 took us to Ward Melville High School (NY) on Monday, April 15 for a big Suffolk County matchup between the Patriots and visiting Smithtown West Bulls (NY). Ward Melville used a stifling defense and consistent, balanced attack to build a 7-1 first-half lead en route to a dominant 13-4 final. Check out the video for some great highlights of the action.

Relive the Season: Chapter 5 – Darien (CT) at Wilton (CT)

This spring, the LR News team traveled to 15 games across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Regions, making stops from Conestoga (PA) up to Salisbury (CT) and many in between. Chapter 5 took us to Wilton High School (CT) on Thursday, April 11 for a great rivalry matchup between the Warriors and visiting FCIAC foe Darien (CT). Darien built a big second-half lead and withstood a furious Wilton rally to earn a 12-10 victory at Wilton’s Tom Fujitani Field. Check out the video for some great highlights of the action.

Relive the Season: Chapter 4 – Cherry Creek (CO) at Moorestown (NJ)

This spring, the LR News team traveled to 15 games across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Regions, making stops from Conestoga (PA) up to Salisbury (CT) and many in between. Chapter 4 took us to Moorestown High School (NJ) on Saturday, April 6 for a big interstate girl’s matchup between the Quakers and visiting Colorado power Cherry Creek (CO). After a back-and-forth start, Moorestown was able to go on a big run near the end of the first half en route to the 15-4 victory. Weekend Recap: New York, Connecticut State Championships

The final few State Tournaments wrapped up last weekend, highlighted by the New York and Connecticut State Championship games. In New York, Ward Melville (NY) capped their dream season with a 16-4 thrashing of West Genesee (NY) for the Class A title. The Patriots finished their season a perfect 22-0 and stake their claim as the top high school team in the country. It was the first State Title for Ward Melville since 2000. The Patriots were led Saturday by midfielder Christian Mazzone (Rutgers) – who netted two goals to go along with three assists – and LSM Dan Decker, who chipped in with two fast break goals. Also in New York, Garden City (NY) took down Jamesville-Dewitt (NY) by a final score of 13-8 for the Class B championship. As he has all season, sophomore James Sullivan – the Trojans’ faceoff specialist – was dominant on the day, allowing Garden City to break open a 3-3 tie at the half with six consecutive goals in the third. Garden City, after suffering some losses early in the season, really came on toward the end of the year and was the most improved team we saw from March to June. ...

Amazing Finish! Trinity (NY) Ties Game From Midfield as Time Expires, Wins in OT

In a incredible finish last week in New York City High School action, Trinity (NY) took a dead ball at midfield and fired home the tying goal as time expired to tie Hackley (NY). Trinity would complete the improbable comeback by netting the overtime game winner. Check out the video to see the amazing finish.

Girl’s High School Weekend Recap: May 13

Last week in girl’s high school lacrosse was highlighted by some big games in the Tri-State area. St. Anthony’s (NY) had a huge week, going 2-0 while playing two of the top teams on Long Island. First on Wednesday, the Friars hosted Garden City (NY) and knocked off the previously undefeated Trojans in impressive fashion, winning 11-6. Then on Friday, the Friars traveled to Manhasset (NY), where they took down the Indians in overtime, 11-9. After an early loss in Florida to Vero Beach (FL), the Friars have been dominant, amassing a 13-1 overall record. It was also a big week for Moorestown (NJ), who went 2-0 to keep their undefeated season going at 17-0. The first of their two wins this week came last Tuesday over previously unbeaten Shawnee (NJ) by an 8-4 final. Then on Thursday, the Quakers took down Pennsylvania power Conestoga (PA), 15-10. ...

Game Observations: Chaminade (NY) 7, St. Anthony’s (NY) 5

The Chaminade Flyers (NY) held on for a tight victory over CHSAA rival St. Anthony’s (NY) on Thursday evening at St. Anthony’s High School. It was the second of the presumed three annual meetings between the Long Island powers. Chaminade pushed its 2013 record to 13-1. Meanwhile, St. Anthony’s suffered its third setback of the season – and second to the Flyers – and fell to 11-3. Chaminade took leads of 5-2 and 6-4 in the second half, but with both teams playing excellent settled defense they were unable to pull away until the final minute, where a big faceoff win and empty-net goal sealed the victory. ...

Quick Recap: Chaminade (NY) 7, St. Anthony’s (NY) 5

The Chaminade Flyers (NY) defeated the St. Anthony’s Friars (NY) by a final score of 7-5 at St Anthony’s High School’s Cy Donnelly Field Thursday evening in a big CHSAA matchup. The win moves Chaminade to 13-1. St. Anthony’s falls to 11-3. It was the second meeting of the season between the two teams, with the Flyers taking both regular season matchups. As we noted in our game preview, both defenses have been stellar this season, and more than lived up to their billing in this one. Long stretches of great 6-on-6 defense dominated, and goals were difficult to come by in settled situations. ...
