The Week Ahead: Girl’s High School Lacrosse

Last week girl’s high school action was highlighted by a trip North for St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes (VA), who defeated Manhasset (NY) on Friday before falling to St. Anthony’s (NY) on Saturday. Meanwhile, McDonogh (MD) and Garden City (NY) both remained undefeated, as did Moorestown (NJ). West Genesee (NY) also remained undefeated, winning twice last week to push their 2013 record to 10-0. This week features some great matchups with powerhouse teams. ...

Great Games, Great Cause Highlight 13th Annual Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival

It was a picturesque day at Radnor High School on Saturday, April 27 for the 13th annual Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival. Katie Samson – who played lacrosse at Middlebury College in Vermont – was injured and became a quadriplegic in a sledding accident in the winter of 2000. Since then, Katie has been an inspiration to so many, creating the Katie Samson Foundation and working tirelessly in support of spinal chord injury research. To date, her foundation has raised over $1,000,000 thanks to events like the lacrosse festival, which is a great day of games and family activities. On Saturday, there were 26 boy's teams and 28 girl’s teams competing on seven fields in an all-day lacrosse marathon. ...

This spring, the LR News team traveled to 15 games across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Regions, making stops from Conestoga (PA) up to Salisbury (CT) and many in between. Chapter 14 took us to Brien McMahon High School on May 24th for the FCIAC Championship game between Greenwich (CT) and New Canaan (CT). Both teams came out firing and played a very even first half, but the New Canaan Rams (CT) finished the game very strongly and defeated the Greenwich Cardinals (CT) to win the FCIAC Championship 8-5. Boy’s High School Weekend Recap: April 29

The weekend in the boy’s high school landscape was highlighted by some big games, including a West-Coast power playing on the East Coast. St. Ignatius (CA) made the trip from San Francisco to the New York area last week to play two games East of the Mississippi, and the Wildcats more than held their own. First on Thursday, they played perennial power Chaminade (NY) in Mineola, and gave the Flyers everything they could handle in a 5-4 setback. They followed that with a win over Seton Hall Prep (NJ) on Saturday, taking down the Pirates 6-5 in overtime. The game was part of the Big City Classic played at MetLife Stadium. St. Ignatius finishes their East Coast swing with a 1-1 record. The Wildcats carried the banner proudly for lacrosse in California. The trip was a big statement for the school, and perhaps a bigger testament to the growth of the game out West. ...

Girl’s High School Weekend Recap: April 29

Last week in girl’s high school lacrosse was highlighted by a Virginia power making a trip to Long Island for two huge interstate matchups. St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes (VA) headed North for two big games against traditional Long Island powers. First on Friday, the Saints took down Manhasset (NY) by a 16-14 score. Then on Saturday, they traveled to South Huntington to face St. Anthony’s (NY). The game was a close one, won by the Friars 9-8. The win moved St. Anthony’s to 9-1, who after an early-season loss to Vero Beach (FL) have won seven consecutive games. Meanwhile, the Saints suffered their first loss of the season and fell to 19-1. ...

The Chaminade Flyers built a 5-2 third-quarter lead and held off a rally from the visiting St. Ignatius Wildcats (CA) to claim a 5-4 victory on Thursday afternoon at Chaminade High School. Check out the video on the right for some great highlights of the action.
