June 15th marks an important date surrounding communication between prospective student-athletes and college coaches from both NCAA Division I and Division II programs. This is when prospective student-athletes and college coaches can start to engage in recruiting-related discussions. If you are in the high school graduating class of 2024, this information will be extremely important!
What Division I Sports are Affected by the June 15th Date?
For NCAA Division I, June 15th after your Sophomore year is the allowable date for college coaches to initiate or engage in recruiting-related discussions with ALL SPORTS except those listed below.
- Baseball – September 1st of junior year
- Women’s Basketball – September 1st of junior year
- Football – September 1st of junior year except for one call between Apr. 15 and May 31 of junior year
- Lacrosse and Softball – September 1st of junior year
- Men’s Ice Hockey – January 1st of sophomore year
The below graphic shows important dates across all Division I sports. This includes when college coaches can contact a prospective student-athlete via email or phone, and when a student-athlete can take official and unofficial visits.
What Division II Sports Are Affected by June 15th?
For NCAA Division II, June 15th after your Sophomore year is the allowable date for college coaches to initiate or engage in recruiting-related discussions with prospective student-athletes in ANY sport.
What to Expect on June 15th
On June 15th, college coaches at both the Division I and Division II level will be able to engage in recruiting-related conversations with prospective student-athletes. (Remember, for Division I, it is dependent on your sport). This communication includes phone calls, emails, video chat software (Zoom, FaceTime, Skype, etc.), and social media direct messaging. These conversations can be about where you stand on their list, what you have been doing in your recruiting process if they are interested in seeing you play live, and their specific recruiting timeline.
Coaches will also be able to set up official and unofficial visits. Keep in mind that for Division I programs, these visits can not occur until August 1st in most sports.
Remember, DO NOT PANIC if you don’t receive immediate feedback on June 15th or shortly after. College coaches may still be focused on wrapping up the classes of 2022 and 2023, and a majority of coaches will just be starting to shift to the class of 2024 now.
Depending on the conference, coaches may also be able to offer you a spot in their 2024 recruiting class. If you are offered a spot on their roster, this would strictly be a verbal commitment at this time.
