The weekend in the boys high school landscape was highlighted by a couple of big games between some of the best teams in the country.
On Long Island, there was a huge non-league contest pitting one of the best in Nassau County against one of the best in Suffolk as Garden City (NY) traveled to Ward Melville (NY). In a tight defensive battle, the 631 area code came out on top, as the Patriots defeated the visiting Trojans, 7-3. As we noted in our game observations last week, Melvilles defense has been impressive this season. They continued their solid play Saturday, holding Garden City to just three goals while the teams offense went on a 4-0 fourth-quarter run to break a 3-3 deadlock. A huge win for the Patriots, who are one of the best teams in the country thus far at 9-0. Garden City fell to 6-2.
In other Long Island action, Northport (NY) took down Smithtown West (NY) on Saturday, 16-6. While Ward Melville currently has the edge in the race for the Suffolk County Class A crown, look out for both Northport and West Islip (NY) come playoff time.
Meanwhile down in Maryland, MIAA conference play is in full swing. The marquee matchup on Friday featured Boys Latin (MD) facing a Gilman (MD) team that had beaten them in their last three meetings by a combined three goals. In a penalty-filled affair, the Lakers were finally able to take down the Greyhounds by a 9-7 count to move to 13-0 on the season. Gilman fell to 8-2. Also in the MIAA, McDonogh (MD) took down Calvert Hall (MD) on Saturday, 9-6.
In Pennsylvania, Malvern Prep (PA) faced two tough opponents last week and suffered their first loss of the season. On Tuesday, the Friars fell to Episcopal Academy (PA) in overtime by an 8-7 final. They were able to rebound Friday, though, taking down the Haverford School (PA), 13-7, to push their record to 8-1.
Gonzaga (D.C.) upped their record to 13-2 with two wins last week, including a 12-6 victory over Paul VI (VA). Meanwhile, Delbarton (NJ) made short work of Mountain Lakes (NJ), taking down the Lakers 9-1. The Green Wave is now 7-0 on the season. Brunswick (CT) also remained undefeated at 6-0 with a victory over Hotchkiss (CT).
