Sixth-ranked Moorestown (NJ) defeated Colorado power Cherry Creek (CO) going away by the final score of 15-4 at Moorestown High School in New Jersey on Saturday.
The win moves Moorestown to 4-0 on the season. Cherry Creek suffered its first setback of 2013 and falls to 4-1.
The teams traded goals in the opening minutes before Moorestown went on a three-goal run to jump ahead 4-1. A Cherry Creek goal made the game 4-2, and a draw control for the Bruins had them on the attack again. But the Moorestown defense was up to the task, and after they were able to thwart a long Bruins possession, the Quakers ended the half with another three-goal spurt to take a 7-2 lead into the break.
The second half started with two quick Moorestown goals. After Cherry Creek netted one to make the score 9-3, the Quakers went on yet another spurt, scoring the next five to lead 14-3 en route to the 15-4 final.
Junior Marie McCool recorded six goals and tallied one assist for a seven-point day to lead Moorestown. The Quakers won the draw control battle decisively, 15-5.
It was an impressive effort for Moorestown in a big interstate matchup. Ranked No. 6 in the latest Nike/US Lacrosse National High School poll, the Quakers have won 13 consecutive state titles, including last seasons 26-0 championship team. Cherry Creek is one of the best programs in Colorado, having won two of the past three state crowns.
