The sixth-ranked La Salle Explorers (PA) (2-0) defeated the fourth-ranked Garden City Trojans (NY) by a final score of 7-4 at Garden City High School on Saturday.
The win moves La Salle to 2-0 on the season. Garden City falls to 2-1. The loss snaps a 24-game winning streak for the Trojans and marks their first loss since the 2011 New York State Championship Game.
Tied 2-2 at halftime, the Explorers used two quick goals at the start the third quarter by Maryland-bound senior Matt Rambo to break the tie and led the rest of the way to earn a big road win.
The game turned into a battle of special teams in the second half as physical play intensified. At separate points in the half, each squad found itself shorthanded for a two-minute non-releasable infraction (among plenty of other man-up and man-down situations).
La Salle was unable to extend their lead past two goals in third quarter, jumping ahead 4-2 and 5-3 before Garden City was able to get within one at 5-4 entering the final stanza.
That is as close as the Trojans would come however, as the Explorers rode a big performance from their defense and goaltender Nick Hresko who made some clutch saves down the stretch to preserve the win.
Be sure to check back tomorrow for much more on the game, including a video recap and our interview with La Salle head coach Bill Leahy.
