Each Monday this spring, we will be discussing some news and notes from the weekend in high school action.
Last week saw many top Long Island teams opening their schedules. Perhaps nobody had a better week than Garden City (NY), who defeated perennial power Syosset (NY) on Tuesday, March 19 before taking down Loyola-Blakefield (MD) in a huge intersectional matchup at M&T Bank Stadium as part of the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic (photo courtesy of Craig Chase; see full gallery here).
Last week was also a big one for Boys Latin (MD), who routed Gonzaga (D.C.) 13-4 on Tuesday, March 19 before taking down the Hill Academy (Ont., Canada) on Friday, March 22 by an 11-10 count.
Also getting going was Chaminade (NY), who handled Massapequa (NY) on Thursday, March 19 by a 9-5 count. Last week, we mentioned in our Stat of the Week that the Flyers’ defense had held the Chiefs to 6.2 goals per game over the past five meetings, well below their scoring average over the same time frame against all other opponents (11.6). Thursdays game was more of the same, with Chaminade holding Massapequa to 5 goals, including just one in the first half en route to a 7-1 lead.
Some notable scores from last weekend:
Thursday:
Chaminade (NY) 9, Massapequa (NY) 5
Highland Park (TX) 11, Episcopal Dallas (TX) 8
