This high school season, we will be bringing you a feature each Tuesday where we provide some notable news and notes for the week ahead. Here is the feature for March 19.
Content note: With the girls season just getting underway in many areas, we will debut our content on that side next week.
This week, the boys high school season gets into full swing. There are some great inter-sectional games, and with the Northeast region getting going, we can begin to get a feel for some of those teams for the first time outside of scrimmages.
What is always noteworthy is with teams playing their first games, upsets are not uncommon. All teams in the early going are still finding an identity and are on upset alert. This is especially true in the Northeast, where teams expected to compete for state championships play meaningful games early.
Game of the Week: Avon Old Farms (CT) vs. Kent Denver (CO) at Tampa, FL (Tuesday, 3/19).
There are some excellent contests this week, but this one gets the nod for matching up two respected teams from across the country at a neutral site. Kent has one game under its belt, a 14-6 victory over Heritage High School (CO). Avon will be playing its first game. It is always fun to see the outcomes from big inter-state games.
Team to Watch: St. Pauls (MD).
As we noted yesterday, St. Pauls has started the season 3-0, already equaling their win total from a year ago. Credit to head coach Rick Brocato and his players for what looks to be a huge offseason turnaround. Following last weeks wins over Hill Academy (Ont., Canada) and The Haverford School (PA), another big contest against traditional power Georgetown Prep (D.C.) is set for Tuesday. This is another great litmus test for the Crusaders.
Stat of the Week: An interesting tidbit from the Massapequa-Chaminade matchup (Thursday, 3/21):
In their past five meetings (2008-2012), Chaminade has held Massapequa to an average of 6.2 goals per game all Flyers victories. Against all other teams during that same time span, the Chiefs averaged 11.6 goals per game.
Noteworthy Games: There are a plethora of awesome games this week. Here are five that stand out in addition to those listed above.
3/19 Gonzaga (D.C.) @ Boys Latin (MD)
3/20 Dallas Jesuit (TX) @ St. Mark’s (TX)
3/22 Syosset (NY) @ Smithtown West (NY)
3/22 Hill Academy (Ont., Canada) @ Boys’ Latin (MD)
3/23 Loyola-Blakefield (MD) vs. Garden City (NY) at Baltimore, MD
