D3-Showcase-All-Star-Def-StillOn Monday, January 21 at the Indoor Sports Pavilion in Randolph, New Jersey, nearly 160 athletes competed at the inaugural D3 Showcase presented by SportsRecruits.com.

The action was solid all day, with 10 teams playing three games apiece. Each team was led by a DIII head or assistant coach and chosen at random prior to the showcase.

There was plenty of talent on hand, with many players making a mark on the coaches assembled. While certainly not an all-encompassing list, we put together a list of standouts – three from each position, plus a long-stick midfielder, faceoff-man and goalie.

Here is a look at our All-Star Defense, including goaltender.

DEFENSE:

Charlie Mirisola (New York, NY/Horace Greeley): A tenacious defender, what stood out most about Mirisola was the physical aspect of his game. Even on a day where body checking was off-limits by rule, Mirisola was able to assert himself aggressively with good, hard checks and position defending. A vocal defender who played with an edge, the New Yorker also showed an excellent handle clearing the ball.

Logan Ryan (Brookfield, CT/Fairfield Prep): Blending a nice mix of range and athleticism, Ryan impressed with his ability to get the ball up and out of the defensive end to spark transition. He showed good footwork on defense and led multiple rushes up field with the ball, even getting into the act on offense with a goal.

Jack Ullrich (Hingham, MA/Hingham HS): The Massachusetts product has a very active stick, and made his mark throughout the day throwing smart checks and getting into the gloves of opposing players. A tall player, Ullrich had good reach and was able to keep attackers at a comfortable distance while throwing some impressive takeaway checks.

GOALIE:

Jake Sonberg (Bedford, NH/Bishop Guertin): An athletic goaltender, Sonberg played well in the net utilizing solid footwork and a good stick. He tracked the ball well and was able to step to shots utilizing his fundamentals and positioning. When plays broke down, he was also able to make some athletic saves inside.
