FF-2012-Super-Sophs-StillThe 2012 Super Sophs Showcase featured some excellent lacrosse on Saturday and Sunday, July 28 and 29, 2012 at New Canaan High School in New Canaan, Connecticut.

A showcase for rising juniors, the action was impressive both days with spirited and competitive games. The boys took the field on Saturday, while the girls games were played Sunday.

Over the weekend, coaches from UMass, Penn State, Bryant, Army, Brown, Bucknell, Stony Brook, Fairfield, Hartford, Quinnipiac, Princeton, Sacred Heart, Penn, Michigan, Marquette, Navy, Manhattan, Dartmouth, Yale, Wesleyan, Connecticut College, Marywood, Washington College and Richmond were in attendance.

Here are five players from the girls action on Sunday that stood out.

2012 GIRLS SUPER SOPHS FEATURED FIVE:

Molly Fishter (Florham Park, NJ/Madison High School)

OVERALL: Fishter has excellent footwork and used her stick well to knock down passes in the defensive zone. She was also impressive in the midfield picking up ground balls, and showed her athleticism in the transition game. Fishter has committed to play at Michigan.

FROM THE NOTEBOOK: Athletic. Good position defender. Great footwork. Good stick.

Emilia Lopez-Ona (Princeton, NJ/Princeton High School)

OVERALL: A quick and fast player, Lopez-Ona’s game is permeated by her speed. She ran well in transition and has a very good stick. A good challenger who dodges with her head up, she also was able to find open cutters in front of the cage addition to finding the net herself. Lopez-Ona is committed to play at Pennsylvania.

FROM THE NOTEBOOK: Fast. Great handle. Good field sense. Quick first step.

Haley O’Hanlon (Garden City, NY/Garden City High School)

OVERALL: A good attacker, O’Hanlon made smart plays and displayed a good sense for the game. What impressed most was her hustle and versatility. She was very quick to redefend, and on multiple occasions was able to cause turnovers that led to transition goals. O’Hanlon has committed to play at Colgate.

FROM THE NOTEBOOK: Shifty. High lacrosse IQ. Smart player. Hustles. Rides well.

Taylor Webster (South Orange, NJ/Montclair Kimberly):

OVERALL: Webster is a powerful player who was able to create her own shot throughout the day in the offensive zone. The most impressive part of her game was her work in the midfield, both offensively and defensively. She used great athleticism and footwork to create turnovers and spark transition, carrying the ball well and finding open players.

FROM THE NOTEBOOK: Powerful finisher. Good footwork. Imposing field presence.

Caroline Zaffino (Darien, CT/St. Paul’s School):

OVERALL: Zaffino was outstanding offensively and in the transition game, carrying the ball up-field and scoring on many occasions. She used her long stride to beat defenders to the goal and utilized excellent stick skills to handle the ball in the 8-meter arc.

FROM THE NOTEBOOK: Long stride. Awesome finisher. Excellent in transition.

Others who made an impression:

Caroline Ashford (Wilmington, DE/Deerfield Academy): A long player, Ashford was a force on face offs, utilizing her reach to corral lose balls.

Ellie Bennett (Darien, CT/Darien High School): Bennet played solid position defense and showed good lateral movement when defending.

Hanna Bocklet (Cross River, NY/John Jay High School): An impressive midfielder, Bocklet was constantly involved in the action and displayed a knack for scoring inside.

Claire Peck (Essex Fells, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic Academy): Peck impressed with her dodging ability, weaving through traffic and finishing powerfully numerous times.

Dana Smith (Princeton, NJ/Princeton High School): Smith wowed with her speed defensively and impressed carrying the ball through the midfield.
